During Flood Action Week, Ellie met with members of West Mercia Search and Rescue to learn more about the vital work they do to keep local communities safe. From responding to flooding and supporting those affected to carrying out searches for missing people, Ellie heard about the wide range of situations the team’s volunteers are called upon to deal with, and the dedication involved in keeping people safe.
Taking these conversations forward, Ellie returned to Parliament the following week to lead a debate on flood resilience. The issue is particularly important for North Herefordshire, where flooding has a devastating impact on homes, businesses, farms and entire communities. Ellie used the debate to press the Government on what more can be done to prepare for flooding, better protect those at risk and help communities become more resilient in the face of future flooding. It was an important opportunity to bring the experiences and concerns of local communities into Parliament and work to protect the people and places affected by flooding.
The visit provided an opportunity to recognise the incredible commitment of West Mercia Search and Rescue’s volunteers and everyone involved in supporting residents before, during and after flooding. Their work makes a real difference to communities across the area.
