As the Green Party’s Treasury Spokesperson, Ellie responded to the Government’s latest Budget, making the case for a different approach to the country’s economic priorities. On Budget day, Ellie was in the House of Commons for the Chancellor’s statement, following the announcements closely and setting out where she believes the Government has fallen short.
Ellie has been particularly vocal about the lack of ambition in the Budget when it comes to tackling the climate crisis and supporting households with the rising cost of living. She raised concerns about the absence of new investment in renewable energy and climate adaptation, as well as the Government’s continued reliance on the proposed Rosebank oil field.
The Parliamentary Green Party has been calling for much bolder action to make a real difference to people’s everyday lives, including greater support with energy bills; investment in home insulation; an emergency rent brake and free bus travel for young people. Ellie also highlighted the need for fairer taxation of major banks, arguing that their enormous profits could help fund the public services and support that communities need.
Ellie will continue to challenge the Government on its economic priorities and push for a Budget that puts people, communities and the environment first.
