The topic of extreme heat was raised in the House of Commons by fellow Green Party MP Hannah Spencer, when she proposed legislation for a maximum safe workplace temperature.
Ellie emphasised that the climate crisis is becoming a public health crisis. She expressed the concern that many of her constituents have about children and young people working during heatwaves. She added that extreme heat had caused dozens of school closures in Herefordshire, highlighting the lack of infrastructure and building adaptations needed to cope with rising temperatures.
Ellie stressed that climate crisis is only going to escalate, with extreme weather becoming more frequent. She expressed how we need to adapt to these changes by fitting buildings with shading devices and planting more trees in urban areas to help communities cope with higher temperatures.
